SOMALIA: President Sharif meets with seperatist leader in Dubai
Dubai (RBC) The president of Somalia’s transitional federal government Sharif Sheikh Ahmed has met with the separatist leader of Somalia’s northern region in Dubai, UAE, RBC Radio reports.
The meeting which was the first its kind has taken place in Dubai on Thursday during the second UAE Counter-Piracy Conference hosted by the UAE government.
“The two leaders met and talked frankly as they discussed the peace process of the country.” Somalia defense minister Hussein Arab Isse told the state owned radio on Thursday.
After the meeting the two men announced a four points consensus which will pave to continue the talks between the two sides as they also agreed to support the outcome of the previous discussions between the two sides which was held in London this month.
A Somali diplomat in Dubai told RBC Radio that president Sharif has also called for Somaliland administration to open the interaction and the flow of people into Somaliland controlled regions which were already restricted.
Thursday’s meeting was facilitated by UAE government with the participation of two main local administrations of Puntland and Galmudug of Somalia.
Somaliland which still claims as breakaway region from Somalia has established first face to face talks with the Mogadishu based government of Somalia. Local observers believe the ongoing talks could eventually gain to reach a full agreement on unity.
