SOMALIA: TFG and AMISOM forces say new bases seized from Al Shabaab
Mogadishu (RBC) The African Union forces in Somalia backing transitional government troops seized new bases from Al Shabaab after heavy fighting erupted near Laanta Buuro, 40-km south from Mogadishu early on Wednesday, officials said.
The leading commander of Somalia national army, Gen Abdukarim Yusuf Aden Dhagabadan told local media that the joint forces secured Laanta Buuro, Key training location for Al Shabaab in the Middle Shabelle region.
“After early morning operation, the national army along with the AMISOM military have captured strategic places including Laanta Buuro, former Somali training camp and former prison” Gen Dhagabadan said.
He said the places seized were training camps for Al Shabaab, which is Al Qaeda proxy and that some foreign fighters used there to radicalize the teenagers recruited from different regions of the country.
“We have killed three from Al Shabaab and some of them captured alive” Gen Dhagabadan added denying that they encountered resistance from the Islamist rebels during the Wednesday’s operation.
Laanta Buuro lies on the road that links Afgooye town to the other districts of the region including Merka town, the region’s capital which is now the largest base for Al Shabaab senior commanders.
At least 12 people were killed in today’s battle, health officials confirmed RBC Radio.
Meanwhile, a statement from said that the move to take the camp comes at a critical time for the capital as it prepares to host a National Constituent Assembly which will adopt a provisional constitution and end 12 years of transitional government.
There were no any comments from Al Shabaab spokesman towards the operation.
