SOMALIA: 5 AMISOM personnel are missing in action after fighting in Lower Jubba region
Mogadishu (RBC) The African Union forces command in Somalia [AMISOM] says five of its military personnel are missing in action after heavy fighting erupted in Miido town near Afmadow, some 120km from Kismayu, a press statement from AMISOM said today.
“AMISOM forces, together with TFG soldiers, captured Miido town on 31 August 2012, in an operation that killed 36 Al?Qaeda linked Al?Shabaab militants. Miido is situated 16 kilometres south of Afmadow, which was secured by AMISOM troops in July 2012” the statement said.
“Regrettably, 5 AMISOM personnel are missing in action after the incident. Their status is currently unclear, but search and rescue operation has been mounted. Three other AMISOM soldiers sustained injuries and have been flown to Dobley for medical attention” it added.
The AMISOM spokesman said that turing the operation, 7 Al?Shabaab vehicles and logistic supplies were destroyed while other assorted weapons and ammunition were recovered.
Meanwhile the Al Shabab fighters have displayed at least four dead bodies of Kenyan military in the port town of Kismayu on Saturday. Hundreds of Kismayu residents were called to come and watch the dead bodies.
The Kenyan defense ministry did not give any details of the its soldiers killed and displayed in Kismayu.
On the otherside Al Shabab claimed that they have gunned down two Kenyan helicopters near Afmadow town but the reports were dismissed by AMISOM force commander Lt?Gen Andrew Gutti.
