SOMALIA: Al-Shabay says they assassinated Somali MP, Late Mustafa
Mogadishu (RBC) Al Shabab rebel group in Somalia has claimed the responsibility of assassinating a member of Somalia’s new parliament, late Mutafe Haji Mohamed in Mogadishu on Saturday.
Several unidentified armed shot dead the MP at around 6:15pm of Saturday evening shortly after he left a mosque near his home at Ali Bolay village of Waberi district, south of Mogadishu.
In a short message posted on its twitter account, the group claimed the attack as “eliminating apostates” in the parliament.
“Yesterday, Mujahideen successfully eliminated apostate MP Mustafa Mohamed Mo’alin in Waaberi district.” the message on the twitter read.
On Sunday, Former Somali president Sharif Sheikh Ahmed, Senior government officials, the speaker of Somalia parliament Mohamed Osman Jawari and member of family of the deceased MP attended the burial of late MP Mustafa who was buried at Sheikh Sufi graveyards at Wardhigley district.
“I want to ask all Somalis to forgive our deceased brother who was assassinated by cruel hands” Sheikh Sharif said speaking to the media shortly after the burial ended. “I hope the those criminals will be captured and put before the justice.” he added.
Late MP Mustafa, who was only sworn into the parliament in August this year was the father-in-law to the former president Sharif Sheikh Ahmed. He has left behind three wives and more than 20 children including young boys and daughters.
The assassination act was also condemned by the current president Hassan Sheikh Mohamud and the parliament speaker Mohamed Osman Jawari as they vowed to launch strict security measures in the capital city.
