SOMALIA: Nigeria sends Formed Police Unit to Mogadishu
Mogadishu (RBC) The African Union Mission in Somalia has received its second Formed Police Unit (FPU) comprising of officers, women and men from Nigeria, a press statement from the mission said on Tuesday.
“The police unit which arrived on September 16th, 2012 will join another unit from Uganda which is already on the ground” the statement added.
“The Special Representative of the Chairperson of the African Union Commission (SRCC) for Somalia, Ambassador Boubacar Gaoussou Diarra has described the arrival of the second AMISOM Formed Police Unit as a clear demonstration of the AU’s continued commitment to supporting the Federal Republic of Somalia” the statement also mentioned.
The African Union forces in Somalia have spent since 2007 in Somalia battling against Islamist rebels in the country, Al-Shabab and the mission now begun to launch first police force under the name of AMISOM to maintain security and train Somali police force despite the growing security challenges and assassinations are still on high in the capital Mogadishu, where no police protection is available by the ordinary citizens yet.
