SOMALIA: Local NGO staff abducted in Bay region

The O NGO workers were traveling on the main road between the two towns, one of the most dangerous routes in the region, when their car was stopped by armed men.

MOGADISHU (RBC Radio) Seven locals working for humanitarian non-governmental organization have been abducted between Burhakaba and Baydhabo on Saturday by unidentified armed men.

According to sources at the NGO, the GREDO NGO workers were traveling on the main road between the two towns, one of the most dangerous routes in the region, when their car was stopped by armed men and then abducted.

The abducted NGO staff were; two women and five men including the driver.  All are Somalis.

No group has claimed the responsibility of the abduction.

The local non-governmental organization GREDO has been operating in the regions under the South West state assisting drought-affected families and displaced persons.

The authorities and security officials are yet to comment on the matter.
