INDIAN OCEAN, (RBC Radio) - The Somali pirates have seized a Chinese bulk carrier ship from the Indian Ocean on Monday, EU naval forces say.
The ship was not registered with the European Union naval forces in the horn of Africa, a statement from the EU naval command said.
“Around noon local time, October 19th 2009 the Bulk Carrier DE XIN HAI from the Peoples Republic of China was hijacked in the Indian Ocean, 350 nautical miles North East of the Seychelles and 700 nautical miles off the East coast of Somalia” the statement revealed.
This seizure makes the number of hijacked ships by the Somali pirates six. The pirates last week hijacked Singaporean container from the Indian Ocean.
On indication of an attack an EU NAVFOR Maritime Patrol Aircraft, operating from the Seychelles was launched to investigate the incident, the naval forces told.
Since last year foreign warships have been patrolling the gulf of Aden, one world’s busiest lanes where pirates had hijacked more than hundreds of ships.
Pirates are believed to launch more attacks after the monsoon time.
