Somalia: Pirates threaten to Kill the Crew of Chinese Cargo Ship (RBC NEWS)

HOBYO, (RBC Radio)- Pirates from Somalia who hijacked a Chinese bulk carrier in the Indian Ocean threatened to kill its 25 Chinese crew members if any rescue operation was attempted.
The ship, named ‘De Xian Hai’ and carrying coal, was en route from south Africa to India, according to China’s Xinhua news agency.
Qingdao Ocean Shipping Co Ltd, owner of the vessel, reported the incident to the China Maritime Search and Rescue Centre, Xinhua said.
The ship is supposed to anchor in the north Somalia where the pirates will demand a ransom.
According to the European Union’s anti-piracy naval mission EU NAVFOR, the ship was seized 550 nautical miles northeast of the Seychelles and 700 nautical miles off the east coast of Somalia
Somali pirates have recently ramped up attacks after a period of quiet during poor weather.
A total of 146 people, including the crew of the De Xin Hai, are currently being held hostage by pirates.
