Somalia: Puntland reconciles Rival Clans in Bosasso (RBC NEWS)

BOSASSO, (RBC Radio) - The authorities of semi- autonomous region of Puntland have said they concluded a peace treaty between two rival clans in the northern east region on Wednesday, RBC Radio reports.

A well organized meeting aiming the signing of peace treaty between the rival clans has been held in Bosasso’s new airport terminal where the president Abdurrahman Mohamed Farole and some of the cabinet attended.

Traditional elders from the two rival clans and local religious men also gathered to witness the signing of this treaty which is to end a year-long agony between the neighboring clans.

Clashes between the two rival clans started last year at a disputed water reserve in Igdheys Village, near Ufeyn district some of 250-km south east Bosasso.

Sultan Mohammed Yusuf Abdi interviewed by RBC Radio said the points of the treaty contained to end the fighting which engulfed more than forty people and wounded fifty others from the two sides, since it begun.

The agreement also demonstrates to stop any tension between the two sides and disarm the tribal militia, while the disputed area will be dominated by the government.

This treaty which the two clan elders of Ali Saleban and Ali Jabrahil have signed together also achieved that the both tribes should pay compensation money of the dead.

Efforts to end this log term fighting is seen a hardest attempt made by Puntland authorities since January election which Mr. Farole had won.

Puntland president Abdurrahman Farole who ended 29 days visit to the warring places had urged the clan leaders to prevent any fighting between the clans saying “fighting kills but not safes life”.

Clan leaders Ali Farah and Sultan Abdullahi Farah Jeni’ad of the two clans who signed the draft treaty have welcomed the efforts made to end the war. They also both called for a unity.

Puntland’s vice president Abdulsamad Ali Shire spoke at the scene said had advised the clan militia to refrain from insecurity acts which could paralyze the development on the ground.

Bari governor Dr. Muse Gelle Yusuf and other government members attended at the meeting which was completed with smile.
